Modernizing “My Care Plan” with AI to Transform Cancer Care

Tenfifty, in collaboration with Consid and the Regional Cancer Centres (RCC), is working to modernize “My Care Plan” using AI. Our shared goal is to streamline the creation of personalized patient information within cancer care. The aim is to free up time for healthcare staff and enable a more efficient use of their expertise. By combining Tenfifty’s expertise in AI with Consid’s strategic digital solutions, the project sets a new standard for how modern technology can improve patient care.

Generative AI enhances support in cancer care

“People diagnosed with cancer have the right to clear and easily accessible information. That is why My Care Plan exists — it is a national knowledge resource for patients in cancer care. Today, we rely on clinically active contact nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, and other professionals in oncology to spend a great deal of time writing and adapting texts so that the recommendations in care programs and clinical guidelines become understandable to the general public.

When healthcare is under constant pressure and facing staff shortages, it is crucial that we use professional competence in the best possible way — and avoid spending time on tasks that can be solved with modern technology,” says Claire Micaux, Project Manager and National Coordinator for My Care Plan Cancer at RCC.

Background and Preliminary Study

In January 2024, Tenfifty, together with Consid and the Regional Cancer Centres (RCC), conducted a workshop to explore how AI could support the work with My Care Plan. This workshop laid the foundation for a preliminary study carried out during the spring of the same year, where we analyzed existing processes and identified areas where AI could increase efficiency. We found clear opportunities where AI technology could play a key role, not only by automating time-consuming administrative tasks but also by ensuring consistent and accurate content.

“Through various exercises with RCC, we were able to map how the organization currently works and identify what prevents them from using their expertise in a meaningful way. We also identified the potential value a future solution could bring to their operations and to patients. Our vision is to create a more time-efficient and consistent way to produce My Care Plan with reliable content. By freeing up time for healthcare staff to focus on more qualified tasks, we also hope to increase recognition across the organization for the important work behind My Care Plan. Last but not least, we want to ensure that the content becomes better tailored to each individual patient and their needs,” says Niknam Moslehi, UX Designer at Consid.

AI Solutions That Create Value

During the preliminary study, we identified key factors affecting the efficiency of developing My Care Plan. By analyzing workflows and mapping barriers that prevent healthcare professionals from using their time effectively, the goal is to create an AI solution that provides reference suggestions, language improvements, and automatically generated text drafts. These capabilities will be integrated into a web-based tool, making it easy for healthcare staff to create and adapt care plans with high precision and quality.

Some of the AI functions designed to support and streamline the work with My Care Plan include:

  • Automatic draft generation

  • Local writing assistance

  • Reference suggestions

  • Language adaptation

These AI features will be integrated into a web-based interface for easy access and use. The goal is to reduce the time and effort required to create and customize My Care Plan, while improving quality and accuracy. Importantly, all generated text will be based on sources pre-approved by the Cancer Centre.

“At Tenfifty, we are proud to contribute our AI expertise to make cancer care planning more efficient and effective. By using AI, and in this case generative AI, to create care plans, we can free up valuable time for healthcare professionals, allowing them to focus on tasks where their expertise is truly needed. This project is a clear example of how AI can help make healthcare more accessible and equitable for all patients,” says Anders Bjurström, CEO of Tenfifty.

Expected Results and Future Vision

Our work on My Care Plan is expected to free up healthcare professionals’ time for more qualified tasks, while making information more user-friendly for patients. With the help of generative AI, the process is anticipated to be shortened by up to six months, representing a significant increase in efficiency. We believe this solution has the potential to set a new standard for how knowledge resources within cancer care can be developed, with greater precision, speed, and quality. Furthermore, we see opportunities to apply these AI-based solutions to other areas of medicine.
